James “Skip” Miller
SMSGT, USAF Retired
Skip was born on September 15, 1942 in French Camp, CA to Clem and Rema Miller. He passed away peacefully on December 13, 2018 in Richmond, KY. Skip was the oldest of Clem & Rema’s four children. He graduated from Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma, WA in 1960 & joined the Air Force to serve his country. Skip quickly found his passion with the field of Military Police. During his 27-year career, he served at numerous locations and conflicts including the Berlin Wall Crisis, Cuban Crisis, Vietnam War at Tan Son Nhut, and the Cold War. As an airman, he was the Training and Education Superintendent. During a trip home on leave, Skip met his future wife Nancy in 1969, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tacoma, WA. Nancy was the nurse during the birth of Skip’s nieces. They married September 6, 1969 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Tacoma, WA. They honeymooned in Canada and quickly began their 40-year marriage adventure, welcoming the birth of their oldest son, Matthew in June 1970. Skip’s Air Force career took the new family to Wiesbaden, Germany, where they welcomed their second son, John in September 1971. Skip, Nancy, and boys traveled extensively in Europe. His career returned the family stateside in 1972 and Skip continued his law enforcement career with the Federal Bureau of Prisons; City of Tacoma, Pierce County and City of Auburn. While working full time Skip, earned his bachelor’s degree from Pacific Lutheran University in Criminal Justice. Skip and Nancy also welcomed two daughters during this time Laurel in November 1973, and Holly in September 1979. He returned to Saint Martin’s College to complete his master’s Degree in Sociology 1980. Skip retired from the Air Force in 1987. He was able to work with The State of Washington as a jail inspector. The state inspecting job was his absolute favorite until he became a grandfather. He was overjoyed to have Emily, Bailey, Dakota, Cierra and Deacon to spoil and love on. During retirement, Skip traveled and shared his military stories, passion of history, learning and travel with his children and grandchildren. Skip is preceded in death by his wife, Nancy; parents Clem and Rema. He leaves behind his four children Matthew, John, Laurel and Holly, son in law Bob Stone. Grandchildren, Emily, Bailey, Cierra, Dakota and Deacon. Brothers David (Linda) Miller, Norman (Linda) Miller; Sister, Patricia (David) Kilmartin. Uncle Joe (Barbara) Miller, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and family friends.
Funeral Mass will be 10:00am Saturday December 22, 2018 at Saint Mark Catholic Church in Richmond, Ky., with Father Tom Farrell officiating. Inurnment will be scheduled at a later date at Camp Nelson National Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00pm-8:00pm Friday December 21, 2018 at Davis & Powell Funeral Home. www.davisandpowellfuneralhome.com
